Why It’s Absolutely OK to CASE the Catty – CTC 139 – Everyday Occasions

Hi there! Welcome to my blog and another round of CASEing (Copying and Selectively Editing) from the CTC Crew.  If you want to get straight to the challenge, please skip to the info below the banner; if you want to know more about the benefits of using the Stampin’ Up! Catalogues for inspiration, please stick with me for my little ‘soap box moment’.

Here’s a little bit of history about my journey as an Independent Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator –

Way back in 2008 a lovely mum at ‘my’ school had just joined up as a demonstrator and she was so excited about the release of the NEW catty.  Her excitement and enthusiasm lead to a Teacher’s Assistant booking a workshop. I certainly wasn’t interested in ‘stamping’ but at the last minute I decided I would go along to see what all the fuss was about.  Just maybe they had a ‘teddy bear’ stamp that I could use to make tags.  At the time I was passionate about hand sewing mohair bears and had made over 100 by that stage.

I was less than enthusiastic about getting inky with the first make ‘n’ take as the OCD in me (at the time) did not want to ink up a roller and spread ink across a pristine piece of white card stock!  What if I mucked up??? I politely declined to join in and decided to flick through the catalogue instead, anxious to find a teddy bear stamp to validate my attendance. I did find one in a stamp set but it just wasn’t the right style that I was looking for … however, in my search I came across a page that featured some beautiful sea shell stamps.

Now, … I was brought up in a beach town and a lot of childhood memories centre around collecting shells and spending countless hours exploring rock pools, making sandcastles with shells for decoration and searching for elusive cowrie shells across the expanse of 7 Mile Beach with my nan. So of course I fell in love with that stamp set and was determined to make the card in that catalogue that featured those beautiful shell images.

Having to make an early exit from the workshop due to meeting up with old friends later in the afternoon, I promptly declared that I would like to buy all the stuff to make that card – stamps, paper, ink etc. grab a catalogue and book a workshop, much to the surprise and delight of the lovely demo who soon became my first up-line and friend.

Well, the rest they say is history.  My pre-demo life started with me wanting to CASE the Catty! It was a good, safe place to start and I still continue to embrace the notion 9 years on.  A team ‘CASE the Catty Launch’ three years ago lead to the formation of CASEing the Catty Challenges and now the lovely, Rebecca Scurr is our team co-ordinator.

So … GO FOR IT.  CASE the Catty, join the challenge … it is more than OKAY and if you need supplies don’t hesitate to contact me as I know first hand how to help you on your journey 🙂

CTC is a group of Stampin’ Up! ® Demonstrators from Australia and New Zealand who love to create using the Stampin’ Up!  ® catalogues as inspiration.

Every Sunday night at 7pm (AEST), the CTC Crew will either directly CASE (Copy and Selectively Edit) or use a sketch/layout, colour combo, embellishment, just to name a few examples, as a springboard for their own creations.

This week we are CASEing projects from the Everyday Occasions section of the current Annual Stampin’ Up! Catalogue which covers pages 18 – 67.

If you read my long introduction to this post, it won’t come as a surprise that I have CASED the ‘So Many Shells’ card on page 39 of the annual catalogue.

So Many Shells – Page 39

I set about making a picture to go inside this beachy looking frame …

… and then realised the stand at the back wouldn’t allow for the frame to be in a landscape position … duh moment … so it ended up on a card. That’s a good thing because I’ve decided to send it to a friend who is recovering from months of chemotherapy and is now cancer free.

The most exciting thing about making this card was using Embossing Paste for the first time.  It wasn’t something that initially I was keen to try until I started seeing all the beautiful samples on my challenge sites.  Oh my! why did I wait so long?  It was FUN and I think I just might bring a jar of the stuff to the next stamp class for a ‘play’.

I added one drop of Pink Pirouette Ink Refill to a small amount of Embossing Paste and used the thin palette knife with the Brick Wall Decorative Mask to spread an uneven layer across the watercolour wash background (Sahara Sand and Pink Pirouette). I absolutely LOVE how the background turned out!

The shell stamps are designed for two-step stamping and here are the colours I used from top to bottom – 1) Pink Pirouette and Blushing Bride, 2) Sahara Sand and Crushed Curry, 3) Pink Pirouette and Calypso Coral.  More project details for the entire card are listed below –

I too have been playing with embossing paste – it is rather addictive! So lovely to hear how you became a demonstrator.

  4. That’s so wonderful about your friend! Your card is gorgeous!!! Embossing paste is the BOMB! You’ll have to come up with a portrait version of your design as it looks great in that frame!
